AFTER setting herself a challenge for 2020, Brading's Cathy Mills has walked 2,412 miles and raised £3,212 for the Alzheimer's Society.

Cathy, with dog Millie, had aimed to walk 1,000 miles, but they just kept on going.

She walked in spirit with three others from across the UK, and three others worldwide, all fans of actor Suranne Jones who is an ambassador for the charity.

Cathy asked several Island businesses if they would have collection tins on their counters and got a good response.

These were Blueberry’s Cafe in Shanklin, The Farm Shop and No.8 Cafe in Bembridge,

The Salix Cafe in Shanklin, The Pointers Inn in Newchurch, the Steamer Inn, Shanklin, Culver Haven, and Rylstone Garden Tearooms.

A group named 50-plus Walkers also collected.

Cathy said: "The first few weeks were cold, wet and windy and then came lockdown.

"I was able to walk in the fields near my home, and my team mates continued solitary walking too.

"Unfortunately only Blueberry’s and the Farm Shop were able to continue collecting in their tins.

"I hit my 1,000 mile goal in July but kept walking. The summer was good, with a lot of people about.

"I spent a fair amount of time just talking to people about Alzheimer’s and decided to become a dementia friend.

"The support I have received from everyone has been amazing and I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has donated and or supported me in any way.

"Special thanks has to go to Blueberry’s which raised £739 and the Farm Shop which raised £350 with a bit more to come."
