During 2020, despite the Covid pandemic, Shanklin Rotary Club still handed out thousands of pounds to good causes at home and abroad.

Robert Adams, presdient, said the club was not able to run its major fundraiser, its big sale, this year, but last year's had given it a lot of money to distribute.

Two of its biggest donations, £7,000 each, went to Sandown-Shanklin Rugby Club for its new balcony project, and Shanklin Rowing Club towards a new boat.

Both the clubs support Rotary with muscle power for its annual sale.

Shanklin Rotary also gave £1,000 to its partner club Amboise Rotary Club, whose fundraising had been difficult due to the pandemic.

Mr Adams said: "We’ve been involved with the crocus planting for the Rotary Purple-For-Polio campaign and have planted crocus outside the new library, at St Blasius Church, at the Wishing Well in the Old Village and have also donated some to the IW Zoo.

"As we weren’t able to hold our annual lunch for Shanklin Age Concern we arranged for gift parcels to be delivered instead.

"We also arranged a Christmas window display in the Age Concern window in Shanklin."
