SANDOWN resident, Katie Balmer, has shared the remarkable story of her pet bird, Saffy — thought to be the only free-flight trained Macaw on the Isle of Wight.

Katie says Saffy became a part of the family at 12 weeks old, and from the very first day she arrived, she has been training her for free flight.

"I had two experienced online mentors who helped and supported me through the initial training," said Katie.

"I used a lot of my knowledge of training dogs, which was transferable to Macaws.

"There are so many vital elements to free flight training — each one as important as the other.

"Elements include bond, diet, fitness and flight skills, as well as desensitisation and recall training.

"I try and fly her everyday. We have a few select locations on the Island which are ideal."

Despite Saffy's obedience and propensity to return, Katie says free-flight is not without its risks.

"Every time we take Saffy out, we understand she may not come home," said Katie.

"We’ve never lost her before, but that’s not to say we never will.

"There are a few free-flight courses on the internet which may be of help to anyone who is interested in free-flight training.

"That said, this type of training is very hard. You must have knowledge and support.

"It is not for everyone, but is so rewarding, and one of the best ways to enrich your bird's life."

Katie is part of a small community of free flyers from around the UK who regularly meet up — when government restrictions permit — to fly their birds.
