The Island Learning Centre activated its lockdown policy earlier today (Thursday), the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.

It followed a report that a young person brought what is thought to have been a BB gun into the school on Albany Road, Newport.

The centre was closed for the remainder of the day.

In a statement the Island Learning Centre said: "No pupils or staff were physically harmed, and the school is due to reopen tomorrow as normal with appropriate support in place for those affected by this incident."

A 16 year old girl was arrested in St James' Street, Newport at around 11:45am this morning (Thursday).

Hampshire Constabulary said officers were called to Albany Road, to a report of a teenager carrying a gun.

A BB gun was recovered, said police, and a police officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a head injury.
