AHEAD of the England vs Scotland match tonight, we asked members of the We Grew Up on the Isle of Wight Facebook group for their favourite memories of when the teams previously clashed.

Many remembered when the two nations met in the Euro 96 championships on June 15, 1996, when England defeated rivals Scotland 2–0.

England got their Euro 96 tournament up and running thanks to the first goal from Alan Shearer after 53 minutes, the penalty saving of David Seaman and the audacious skill of Paul Gascoigne, who scored the second goal just 11 minutes from full time.

James O'Grady said: "I was at the game, behind the goal. I saw Gazza's magic and remember how the press had crucified him pre-tournament, then loved him a week later!"

Chris Stroud was also at Wembley, standing right behind the goal when Gazza scored, and remembers it well.

Many more Islanders admitted they were watching from home in various pubs, including The Vine in Newport and The Star Inn in Ryde.

Several other members of the We Grew Up on the Isle of Wight Facebook group commented on other memorable England vs Scotland clashes too.

Denis Rumbold said: "There are two England vs Scotland games that stick in my mind. The first was 1967 in the Home Championships when Scotland won 3-2 at Wembley, beating the World Cup holders for the first time.

"The other was also at Wembley stadium in 1977. Scotland won 2-1 and the Scots invaded the pitch, dug it up and broke one of the crossbars by swinging on it."

David Squibb added: "I was at Wembley in 1975 when England beat Scotland 5-1, with Gerry Francis scoring twice - happy days!"

John Adams also asked if anyone remembered the international football match at Wembley in 1961, when England beat Scotland 9-3.

John said: "I was there with a mate of my dad - we were right in the middle of the Scots and it was an amazing experience, especially as he had to tell me to keep quiet every time England scored!"
