A RYDE woman who caused a crash while drink-driving on the wrong side of the road, and attempted to kick a police officer during her subsequent arrest, has appeared in court.

Samantha Patrick, of Blackthorn Close, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday (August 9).

The 45-year-old old admitted drink driving in Ryde, on July 23.

She also admitted common assault, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress, on the same date.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court a member of the public had been driving from Ryde to Newport at around midnight, when she stopped at traffic lights on Argyll Street, in Ryde.

Patrick, driving at speed, came around the corner on the wrong side of the road and drove into the path of the witness's car.

The court heard there was a huge impact, air bags were deployed, and the witness was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, including a suspected hernia.

Police attended, and Patrick was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

Ms Miller said Patrick's demeanour immediately changed, and she became verbally abusive toward officers.

The court heard she levelled homophobic slurs at one female police officer and attempted to kick another.

Ms Miller said Patrick registered a breath-alcohol reading of 65, when the legal limit is 35.

Barry Arnett, defending, said Patrick was a single parent with a multitude of mental health conditions.

He said she had been in an abusive relationship, and still suffered PTSD from a traumatic incident from her teenage years.

He said she was not homophobic, but accepted making horrendous, horrible comments.

Invited to speak by magistrates, Patrick said: "I'm really sorry.

"I've acted disgustingly and I'm so ashamed of myself."

Patrick saw her case adjourned so an all-options pre-sentence report could be drawn up.

She will next appear in court on September 2 for sentencing, and was granted unconditional bail.
