Ryde Academy says blazers are 'no longer essential', due to the cost of living crisis, although it says it would prefer them to be worn.

In an update to parents today (Friday), the school says it is reacting to guidance from the Department of Education, which has asked education providers to review school uniform policies, to ensure it is affordable.

The Academies Enterprise Trust-run school said: "Although we are aware that many families have already had to stretch their finances to be able to afford blazers at the start of this year, we do feel we need to address the current financial crisis many find themselves in.

"Although we would prefer blazers to be worn, they will no longer be essential wear.

Instead, a plain, black V-neck jumper should be worn and these do not require a logo.

Ryde Academy added: "We do have a selection of used blazers in our uniform shop
for a small contribution (or often for free if you contact us).

"Any funds raised, through this parent-led shop, are used to help provide uniform for students who have none.
