THE Isle of Wight’s only GAME store, opposite McDonald’s, will soon close amid its move to a larger shop.
Newport’s GAME store, on St James’ Street, will move across the road into South Street Retail Building (opposite Iceland).
GAME is owned by British billionaire retail entrepreneur Mike Ashley, as part of Frasers Group, who also owns Sports Direct, House of Fraser, Jack Wills and other retail brands.
A temporary Sports Direct store, next door to the regular shop, has emptied stock and will close ahead of the imminent reopening of the original site following a lengthy refurbishment.
The Sports Direct store will be on two floors, with sales areas dedicated to brands like USC and Adidas.
It will also include a GAME section, seeing the closure of the St James’ Street store.
The shop was formerly GameStation, which was purchased by GAME in 2007, but following financial difficulties, all stores in the UK were rebranded as GAME.
The County Press has been told there is no definitive date for the GAME store to move, but it will likely be around New Year.
