January 21 saw Britain mark Red Squirrel Appreciation Day and although we're a bit late to celebrate, we thought these cute little bundles of fur, thriving on the Isle of Wight, were defintely still worth a story.

Isle of Wight County Press Camera Club members are well-known lovers of the little rascals and here we show some of their great work.

Meanwhile, Island resident and gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh advised us how we could help the Island's favourite animal survive the winter by planting things they love in our gardens.

Alan said: "The most popular growing food sources are acorns, walnuts, hazelnuts, conifer seeds, holly berries, crab apples, wild and bird cherries, bullace, dogrose and Guelder rose hips, blackberries and raspberries. They also love sunflower hearts."

He added: These trees and shrubs are suitable for gardens of all sizes and by planting them now they will grow and mature and be ready for when the red squirrels come home."
