AN ISLE of Wight RNLI Coastal Safety Team has warned of the dangers of visiting a ‘treacherous’ East Wight beach and has shared tips on staying safe at the coast.

With the start of the holiday season upon us, Bembridge RNLI Coastal Safety Team is concerned about the stretch of beach between Howgate Chine, on the west end of Forelands beach, and Whitecliff Bay.

The safety team has advised Islanders and visitors that due to high rainfall recently, the cliffs in the area are especially treacherous.

Posting on the Bembridge RNLI Facebook page, the Coastal Safety Team said: “The mud can quickly trap you or your dog.

“There is also no signage to warn of the dangers. The phone signal in that area is also very poor.

“In an emergency, if you have a signal, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

“Also, tell someone where you are going.”

The warning came just hours after Bembridge RNLI crews were sent to assist a woman who had hurt her ankle and became cut off by the tide at the eastern end of Whitecliff Bay yesterday (Friday, March 10).

Due to the difficult terrain above where the casualties were found, two people were taken to safety by helicopter before being assessed by paramedics.

While there, the boat crew also spotted a dog belonging to another member of the public that had found its way onto the beach, which was collected and reunited with its owner.
