An Isle of Wight beach has been named the best in the South East and one of the best in the country.

Shanklin ranks fourth on the list of England's top beaches, which has been compiled by car rental company, SIXT.

The firm put together a list of the top 300 beaches in England from TripAdvisor, and ranked them based on several factors.

Those included: Water quality, visitor rating, number of cafes and car parks within 400m (5-minute walking distance), and whether there's a lifeguard and on-site toilet.

Ticking all the boxes was Shanklin beach, which recorded an overall score of 7.71 out of ten.

Water quality there was also rated excellent.

Only Mablethorpe Town Beach, Lincolnshire; Cromer Beach, North Norfolk; and Whitley Bay Beach, North Tyneside were ranked higher.

Shanklin also topped the list of the best ten beaches in the South East.

Data was compiled by collecting each beach’s coordinates and bathing water quality data from the Environment Agency.

Coordinates were then run through the Google Places API to count the number of car parks and cafes within a 400 metre distance, equating to an average walking distance of 5-minutes.

SIXT then manually researched whether there's a seasonal on-duty lifeguard, and on-site toilets at each beach.
