Islanders will still be able to get around for £2 on Isle of Wight buses next year, it has been confirmed, after the Government agreed to extend its capped fare scheme.

Those travelling with Southern Vectis can already benefit from cheaper fares following news, earlier this year, the initiative was carrying on until the end of 2023.

This will now continue until the end of 2024, Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has told the County Press.

The bus firm submitted an application to extend the scheme on the Island, which has now be accepted by the Department for Transport.

After writing to then Transport Minister, Richard Holden, last month, Mr Seely said he has now received confirmation.

Mr Seely said: "The cheap fares enable more Islanders to use the bus to get to work, attend appointments, and visit friends and family – and they will run next year too.

"Several thousands more Islanders are using the bus – and that includes me, I’ve been on it twice in the last fortnight."

The scheme allows Islanders to have fares capped at £2 for a single fare.

It was also extended last month (October), until the end of this year.
