The Isle of Wight has been named as one of the best places in the country for a 'grounding getaway'.

Tour operator Park Holidays compared population density and air and noise pollution levels across the 20 least populated counties in the UK.

A grounding getaway is defined as weekends or retreats where people can practice mindfulness, reconnect with their surroundings and find some peace and quiet.

With a relatively low population, a good air quality rating of 9 (given by aqicn.org) and low levels of noise pollution (146dB), the Island was ranked second on the list.

Only Northumberland came higher.

The study said: "These picturesque locations offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, providing visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in tranquil surroundings and rejuvenate their senses."

Park Holidays said, as more people grow concerned about global warming and issues around travel, getaways focusing on people's health and the environment are set to see an even bigger rise in 2024.

A spokesperson said: "The locations mentioned stand out as exceptional destinations, offering a unique opportunity to escape noise pollution and immerse oneself in the calming embrace of nature."

Cornwall came in third place.
