The boss of VisitEngland has said he is confident the tourism industry is "turning the tide" and has called on Isle of Wight businesses to work together.

Andrew Stokes OBE, the director of the national tourism organisation, has been on the Island for Visit Isle of Wight’s (VIOW's) Visitor Economy Conference.

He told the County Press the industry is starting to "bounce back" after a few challenging years and he believes there are real opportunities for the Island going forward.

He said: "I'm a glass half full kind of guy and there are some wonderful benefits to being an Island.

"I suppose some people will think there are challenges around transport and getting to and from but I think there are very good and important transport infrastructures in place."

In a message to Island businesses, he said: "We've had some really challenging years.

"The answer has to be working in partnership and about seeing how they can work together and with a joined up approach I am confident the industry bounces back."

The conference, at Medina Theatre, was held for tourism-related businesses that pay the Wight BID or are voluntary contributors to the Island’s destination marketing organisation.

VIOW managing director Will Myles took to the stage to discuss how the tourism board can increase the number of visitors to the Island, and what local businesses can do to help.

Although tourism on the Island has yet to return to pre-Covid levels, he said he is positive that will change.

Speaking ahead of the conference, he said: "We're on that journey. Into 2024, it's not going to be easy. The Isle of Wight has a lot to offer.

"Getting on that ferry at Portsmouth, Lymington or Southampton, your holiday starts as soon as you step on board and it's all part of it.

"One thing I will say is: no passport required! You don't have to be stood in a departure lounge. It's a positive thing and we're ready to welcome visitors back into 2024."

Guests saw five sessions across the day from speakers who are experts in their field, followed by a Q&A.
