A group of young people from Brading Youth Centre are trying to achieve their dream of completing their Duke of Edinburgh gold award.

James Milne, Lucy Idle, Megan Still, Abi Swinscoe and Nico Ostler are planning a five-day watersports expedition on the Caledonian Canal in Scotland this August.

The expedition and the training involved will improve their canoeing, campcraft and navigation as well as helping them develop essential life skills such as teamwork and resilience.

So far, the five, aged between 16 and 23, have worked over several years to complete their bronze and silver awards by volunteering in the local community, learning new skills and sports, hiking and camping.

Megan said: "We want to prove that people on the Island can have equal opportunities to those living on the mainland, and that we can all achieve our goals and ambitions.

"We hope to inspire other young people, including the younger DofE participants at our youth centre in Brading, to go for gold.

"This is going to be a life-changing adventure for us."
