WATER levels at Sandown on the Eastern Yar remain high — and will continue to rise at least into the early hours of the morning (Sunday) — following heavy recent rainfall across the Isle of Wight.

In the past 48 hours, some 27mm of rainfall was recorded at Knighton, near Newchurch.

Due to the additional rainfall, river levels at Sandown will continue to rise until at least 1am, the Environment Agency has warned in its latest flood alert, which covers the Eastern Yar and its tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

Flood impacts will continue at Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road, between Brading and Sandown.

Ditches around Fort Holiday Park in Sandown will struggle to drain while river levels remain high.

At Alverstone and Langbridge, no impacts are expected after a dry and sunny day today (Saturday).

Tomorrow, only light rainfall is forecast, giving the river a chance to recover its levels.

But any additional rainfall may maintain the responsive nature of the Eastern Yar catchment, the EA stated in its latest flood alert.

"Property flooding is currently not expected. We will continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages," the government agency added.

Islanders are advised to avoid walking or driving through flood water.

The EA will provide an updated alert at 3pm tomorrow, or sooner, if required.
