The roads of Sandown are set to become a motor racing track this weekend (April 20 and 21), as Sandown Sprint arrives in town and 100 cars prepare to compete.

There are several road closures to be aware of.

Traffic will not be permitted for several days on some roads, to allow for the event and the taking down of required safety equipment afterwards.

This could affect the town until 6pm on Tuesday, April 23.

The roads affected are Culver Parade, between its junction with Crescent Road and its junction with Yaverland Road; Yaverland Road, between its junction with Culver Parade and its junction with Meadow Way; Fort Street, between its junctions with Crescent Road and its junction with Culver Parade; and Kennedy Way, for its entire length.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times during the closure.

Pedestrian access to properties on or adjacent to the road will be permitted at safe intervals and will be escorted by marshals.

The times are subject to change and diversion signs will be put in place.

Motor racing fans are set to descend on this year’s Island Car Centre Sandown Sprint, which has attracted the strongest entry of cars yet.

The cars will compete on a specially created track along Culver Parade.

Spectators can get closer than ever to the cars and the action.

The new Race Village in Fort Street will showcase all the cars and the drivers before they venture to the start line.

Cars range from legendary stars from the world of rallying to fire-breathing, NASCAR-inspired monsters, with almost everything in between.

Promoter Tim Addison said: "It’s not often that Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Goodwood comes to the Island. Many of the cars at Sandown will be starring at events around the country this year and this is a unique chance to see them up close and personal, right on your doorstep."

Tickets cost from £10 per day and accompanied children aged 11 years and under are free.

Neighbouring Sandham Gardens is offering its attractions, including Dino Golf, the Skynets and karting, at half price.
