DO YOU crave a linen tablecloth, a quiet, well-lit dining-room, someone to take your coat and — most importantly — an enticing menu? You will find all these things at Burr's in Lugley Street, Newport.

Burr's generous set menu deals have at least four options on each of the three courses.

Our extraordinary crispy duck and orange starter was almost big enough to be a main and, classic garlic mushrooms, with gently caramelised onions, spilled over cream-soaked toast — making a simple and comforting combination that would be hard to better.

The next course was equally bountiful. Poached salmon fillet in a classic white wine, cream and dill sauce, plus plenty of smoked salmon, gave a pleasing double fish experience.

Our other dish comprised tender chunks of slow-braised beef brisket, nestled among gnocchi in a rich, warming red wine and mushroom jus. Parmesan and rocket were scattered over the top — finishing touches to a very substantial main.

All this, plus a big pot of hot vegetables and potatoes was included with our main courses — and what a selection!

Two different types of potato, including really good roasties, and no fewer than six other veggies, featuring seasonal asparagus.

It would be hard to resist a rhubarb and custard pavlova — and so we didn't!

It was an outrageously good pudding, stuffed with fresh cream, sweet rhubarb and warm vanilla-laced custard.

Even better was a fabulous baked creme brulee cheesecake, with hot cinnamon doughnuts.

The cheesecake was a spectacular slab of crackling brulee-covered delight, decorated with real flowers.

Over the many years since we first visited, we enjoyed experiencing the Burr's style as it has developed and grown, building on classic dishes like our crispy duck or pavlova and making artful presentations that are also outstanding value for money.

This creativity and skill is on offer for less than £10 per course. Very generous courses they were too, not to mention the complimentary extras like bread and fudge.

It seemed like a luxury we had almost forgotten existed when, on standing to leave, our coats magically appeared — held up for donning.

Service at Burrs is as good as the food — and that's high praise.

Traditional it might be, but Burr's is lively, vibrant and innovative too. We loved it in 2007 and we still love it now.
