Year 5 pupils from Oakfield Primary School have enjoyed an interactive four-week hovercraft exploration, coordinated by the Wight Aviation Museum education team.

The venture aimed to enlighten the children on the mechanisms of hovercrafts, their historical roots on the Isle of Wight, and their present-day use by Hovertravel.

The initial lessons were in-school demonstrations, where students experimented with balloons and CDs to comprehend hovercraft functioning, followed by a hands-on experience with large radio-controlled model hovercraft.

The most exciting moment was the third week's trip to Ryde's Hovertravel, offering a guided tour around the Island Flyer.

The children got the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat.

The curriculum concluded with a visit to Wight Aviation Museum, where they delved into the global use of hovercrafts, and interacted with a large Channel Hovercraft model.

Loretta Lale, head of commercial at Hovertravel said: "We at Hovertravel are always very pleased to work with the Island's schools and to develop good education links regarding the heritage of hovercraft on the Island and the continuing service they provide today."
