An American-style restaurant on the Isle of Wight has announced its permanent closure.

Based in the Royal Victoria Arcade, in Ryde, AJ's diner has been serving customers for the last six years.

Revealing its closure on Facebook, the diner said: "We would like to thank everyone for your custom, loyalty and interest."

Reacting to the news, one customer said: "Ah that's a shame. Loved your place and came whenever I could.

"Can't understand why there is no business for you. One of the best places on the Island."

While another said: "Sad to hear this.. you put your heart and soul into it."

The restaurant hit the headlines in April after it received its second one-star food hygiene rating in two years.

Environmental health inspectors from the Isle of Wight Council deemed that 'major improvement' was necessary.

During a visit in February, inspectors saw a member of staff handling raw burgers and then touching bread rolls, without washing their hands. The rolls were disposed of during the visit.

The County Press has attempted to contact the diner for further information on its closure.
