Multiple fire crews from across the Isle of Wight have been tackling a house fire next door to Ventnor Fire Station this evening (Friday, June 14).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) were alerted to reports of a property fire on South Street in Ventnor at around 5.30pm.

A HIWFRS spokesperson confirmed that six fire engines were sent to the scene from Cowes, Freshwater, Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin.

An aerial ladder from Ryde also travelled to South Street.

Despite initial reports, firefighters from neighbouring Ventnor Fire Station are not in attendance.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was also called to South Street, with several cordons erected around the area.

The moment the fire started, captured on video.

The fire happened within a terraced home neighbouring Ventnor Fire Station, with crews spotted on the roof of the affected property and the aerial platform, removing roof tiles to allow the smoke to clear.

After the roof tiles were removed, firefighters used hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control, with other crews entering the property from the street.

The view from North Street confirms the fire has spread through the terrace roofs, affecting more than one property.

By 8pm, the smoke had been cleared and firefighters were no longer pumping water into the property. The cordon remain in place on South Street with four engines still present.

A nearby resident told the County Press they saw the fire start from across North Street Play Park.

The resident saw smoke and went to take a look. They saw a lot of smoke coming out of the roof and a 'sudden whoosh come out'.

Many others approached the property and were told the fire service had been contacted.
