A much-loved family-run service station on the Isle of Wight is to close, more than six decades after opening.

Chale Service Station, on Church Place, welcomed its first customers on June 28, 1960.

Exactly 64 years to the day, on June 28, 2024, it will shut for the final time.

Roy Sheath founded the business alongside his late wife, Hazel.

Today it is run by the couple's son and daughter, Kev and Di, but Roy, now aged 96, has always maintained an involvement.

For many years, the service station has provided diesel and petrol, as well as MOTs and vehicle repairs.

Di told the County Press that a combination of reasons have led to the decision to close, after more than half a century.

The family want to retire, she said, and the building is old and the motor trade not what it used to be.

In a farewell message, the family said: "We would like to say a big thank you to all our past and present employees and customers, as without them we would not have had such a successful business for so long.

"Also a thank you to all our suppliers over the years who have always been most helpful."

The closure will mean the nearest petrol station is Whitwell Garage, on High Street - around four miles away.
