An Isle of Wight seafront has finally welcomed the return of permanent public toilets, after a legal dispute over who should manage them was resolved.

The loos, on Ryde Interchange, are based inside South Western Railway's (SWR) train station, which was refurbished as part of an Isle of Wight Council-led project.

However, there was disagreement over who should be responsible for them.

After months of negotiations, earlier this year it was agreed the town council would pay to clean and insure the facilities for an estimated cost of £27,000 per year, plus VAT.

It was hoped they would open in time for Easter, but this did not happen.

RTC also looked after the now-demolished loos at the former Western Gardens, leasing them from the Isle of Wight Council.

Today, RTC confirmed the new loos are open just in time for the start of Isle of Wight Festival 2024.

Clerk Lisa Dyer said: "Frustratingly, due to the complex nature of the lease arrangement, the legal work has taken some time to complete. We are really pleased to have been able to get these facilities open.

"With the IW festival and summer holidays fast approaching it is vital these facilities are available for residents and visitors."

The new facilities have been designed with modern standards of hygiene, accessibility, and sustainability in mind.

Equipped with touchless fixtures and accessible stalls, the new public toilets are aimed at providing comfort and convenience for all residents and visitors.

The facilities will be open from 6am to 7pm daily.
