More to follow.

UPDATE 5.39PM:  Police were called out at 4.36pm to Wight's fish and chip restaurant, opposite the Star Inn, on the corner of Star Street, Ryde, following a report of an explosion.

Police say expect delays and road closures in the area of the High Street.

They advise residents and businesses in the area to keep their windows closed due to smoke.

UPDATE 5.48PM: The High street is closed and businesses evacuated.

UPDATE 6.21PM: Four appliances were sent — two from Newport and two from Ryde.

An aerial ladder platform was used to access the property.

The fire has now been extinguished, with firefighters damping hot spots inside the flat.

UPDATE 6.24PM: There were no injuries, but the fire had caused damage to the flat, say police.

"The Fire Investigation Team will now survey the scene. Once this has been done and the emergency services have left, the roads will reopen," said an Isle of Wight Police spokesperson.

UPDATE 8.02PM: The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service ended the operation at 7.27pm.

Police are due to open the High Street to traffic again.
