Popular Isle of Wight carnival Mardi Gras event returns to Ryde

The family-friendly event saw more than 20 schools and community groups, two samba bands and a marching band participate in the celebration.

There was a fear inclement weather might put paid to the occasion, and groups were advised to delay children arriving at Simeon Recreation Ground until 2pm to avoid any showers.

Thankfully, at midday, organiser The New Carnival Company announced the event would go ahead.

Leaving Simeon Street Recreation Ground at 3pm, the parade headed to the main town, travelled along The Strand, up Dover Street, along Cross Street, and down Union Street to the Esplanade, ending back on Simeon Street.

The quiet zone, for those who preferred to see the spectacle without the noise, could be found toward the end of the parade, near the canoe lake at the end of the Esplanade.

A Mini Mardi Gras also ran between 11am and 2.30pm, aimed at younger children and their families.
