The first youth-led arts festival on the Isle of Wight will take place in Sandown.

Ascend, the pioneering event shaped by youngsters from the Community Action Isle of Wight’s Bay Youth Project, is happening on July 12 and 13 at the Broadway Centre.

The festival was born out of the young people's concern about a lack of affordable activities within the Bay Area and organisers hope young people from Sandown, Shanklin and Lake support the event.

Tamsin, aged 15, one of the event organisers, said: "It is an opportunity you don’t get every day – when have you ever heard of a festival run by young people, for young people?

"I think it is probably the only one."

Activities will include a Battle of the Bands session with the winning group receiving a recording opportunity and a gig at AAA Records.

The Saturday will be chock full of free, family-friendly activities such as Samba drumming, circus skills and teen-produced films.

All activities will be free as affordable access was a key focus for the young organisers.

The event forms part of the Artswork Young Changemakers initiative aimed at empowering young people to create change within their communities through artistic projects.
