An Isle of Wight man has been banned from every McDonald's in the UK for drunkenly threatening to stab a manager after complaining about his food.

Shane Newnham, of Morton Road, Brading, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 9.

The 38-year-old pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provide unlawful violence.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said Newnham was in Newport’s McDonald’s at 2.30pm on March 22 and was heavily intoxicated.

Ms Miller told the court Newnham complained about his food and became aggressive with staff, prompting an intervention by the McDonald’s manager, who asked him to leave.

Newnham told the manager: “I’ll come back for you, and I will stab you,” Ms Miller said.

In February, Newnham was sentenced for a similar offence and was handed a crown court community order and an alcohol treatment requirement.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client’s experience of being in magistrates and crown court earlier this year was extremely harrowing.

Mr Vincent told the court that Newnham’s sentence in February resulted in a breakdown between him and his family, which, in turn, affected his health and mobility.

At McDonald’s that day, Newnham’s wallet had been lost or stolen, and it was the last straw that put him over the edge, resulting in his ‘spontaneous’ action, said Mr Vincent.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report to be carried out ahead of sentencing at the IW Crown Court on September 17.

Newnham was granted bail, but with conditions to not attend any McDonald’s restaurant in the UK.
