Newport's Island Learning Centre is sporting a £100,000 makeover in response to evolving pupil needs.

The three-month refurbishment, a project by the Isle of Wight Council, saw classrooms modernised and parts of the building reconfigured.

Ceremony attendees included local councillors and staff.

Several specialist areas were set up for pupils to learn new skills, featuring a maintenance workshop, dance studio, hair salon, and a life skills area with kitchen and dining spaces.

Undertaken by local firm MCM Construction, this upgrade helps the school's current focus on students aged 11 to 16 requiring extra help with their social, emotional, or mental health needs.

The facilities will assist these pupils in their reintegration into education while providing a vocational curriculum and supporting their transition to adulthood.

Ashley Whittaker, the council's director of children's services, said: "In modern societies, with all the challenges children and people have, we are seeing more diversity and an even greater need to think differently about how we support these children and their different needs."

Headteacher, Chris Toner, said: "I want our children to feel welcomed, valued and get something meaningful from their education. We're incredibly lucky to have a fantastic building with wonderful spaces which the children absolutely love. It's been great to see them enjoying and using their brand new surroundings."
