An Isle of Wight Festival-goer was caught drink driving with no licence or insurance after deciding to give Saturday night headliners The Pet Shop Boys a miss.

Charlie Richardson, of Barton Road, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 9.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, said a Hyundai i20 was spotted leaving the Isle of Wight Festival car park at around 6.30pm on Saturday, June 22, and was stopped by police on Fairlee Road.

Richardson informed police he had just purchased the vehicle, so he had no licence and insurance yet. Police noted a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client had been at the festival and decided to leave early, having not drunk alcohol for some time before getting behind the wheel.

Mr Vincent said the vehicle flagged up on the police system as uninsured, and it was not the manner of Richardson's driving that caused the stop.

Richardson’s alcohol reading was 64 at the roadside, falling to 55 and 54 later at the police station, Mr Vincent added.

Magistrates banned Richardson from driving for 15 months.

They handed him a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
