THE stench of scorched belongings still permeates in Lake this afternoon following a major fire yesterday evening (Thursday).

Fire crews from across the Isle of Wight were alerted to the incident on Desmond Price Close shortly before 7pm.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service received around 20 emergency calls reporting the blaze.

Firefighters from Sandown, Ryde and Shanklin were supported by Ventnor’s water carrier and the Newport aerial ladder vehicle.

The fire involving an area of sheds spread to the roof of a nearby house, before also damaging a camper van and a car.

Residents living in the area had described hearing a least one explosion, with the 'bang' heard in Sandown.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the fire using jets and hose reels, and gas and electric engineers isolated the supplies to the building.

A reinspection was carried out this morning to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.

Even this afternoon, the faint scent of scorched steel and wood still carries down the road.
