Her sassy 'New Yoik' accent and an all-round glass-half-full attitude encapsulates Charity's yearn to be loved.
Charity's friends - her fellow nightclub hostess girls - accuse her of having a 'heart like a hotel', but Charity's hopes and dreams are often thwarted by no fault of her own (if you don't count her own over-exuberance).
Emily Scotcher is a convincing all-singing all-dancing Charity, heading up this bright and colourful show, which features the songs Big Spender, Rhythm of Life, I Love to Cry at Weddings and If My Friends Could See Me Now.
This take is directed by Sarah Scotcher and, from the minute we walked in the joint, it featured ambitious, impressive and memorable set design and some great song and dance numbers, which deliver some wow-moments.
Medina Theatre convincingly transforms into the Fandango Club and Coney Island. The musical interludes (accompanied by real musicians) are big and sparkly and I lost count of the number of sequins.
Shout out for The Rhythm Of Life, which delivered us into a rather psychedelic 60s haze.
The audience laughed and felt sad for Emily's brilliant Charity, who (fortunately) doesn't stop to feel sad for herself.
We hoped she'd get her guy although, ultimately, this really isn't the point: This is about one New York gal's joie de vivre and self confidence.
The show features some great performances, including from show girls Nickie and Helene, played by Beth Mansell and Izzi Rudd, and Ches Checkley's sincere-sounding Oscar Lindquist, whose breakdown in a stuck elevator was a piece of lovely comedy.
There are great costumes, changes of mood and pace, and plenty to keep the cast busy. We recommend grabbing a ticket today, from the box office!
See Sweet Charity at Medina Theatre at 7.30pm tonight (Saturday) and a matinee performance at 2.30pm today, as well.
Sunday's (July 14) performance takes place at 2.30pm.
