STRAIGHT after attending a birthday party for his wife, an NHS care assistant was caught at the wheel while more than twice the drink-drive limit, an Isle of Wight court was told.

Tafadzwa Kundishora admitted drink driving in Cowes on June 12, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday, July 12.

The 38-year-old, of Nelson Drive, Cowes, was stopped by a police patrol for not using headlights on Newport Road, at 10.50pm that night, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting.

Kundishora, with no previous convictions, subsequently failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

At Newport Police Station, a further test revealed Kundishora had 82 microgrammes of alcohol in his breath. The legal limit is 35.

For Kundishora, Jim Osborne said his client deeply regretted his actions — taking the decision to drive after he been to his wife's surprise birthday party.

"His (inevitable) driving ban will have a knock-on effect on childcare and his ability to get to work," said Mr Osborne.

Magistrates handed Kundishora a 20-month driving ban, with a £215 fine, £85 costs and an £86 surcharge.
