A suspected shoplifter has been arrested by police following an incident at Boots in Newport on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said a man resisted officers, before shouting threats at police and security in the store.

Officers were called at around 12.43pm.

They were notified by security staff of a suspected shoplifting in progress.

Police stopped a man in the store and seized a number of de-tagged items.

At least three officers attended and a police van was parked in St Thomas's Square, Newport for a short time.

The 42-year-old was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, resisting arrest, and using threatening or abusive words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence.

He remains in custody at this time.
