An Isle of Wight man has been charged following a suspected shoplifting incident at a high street Boots store.

As previously reported, a man was detained by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers yesterday (Wednesday).

Police said a man resisted officers, before shouting threats at police and security in the store.

Officers were called to the health and beauty retailer at 12.43pm.

They were notified by security staff of a suspected shoplifting in progress.

Police stopped a man in the store and seized a number of de-tagged items.

At least three officers attended and a police van was parked in St Thomas's Square, Newport for a short time.

A 42-year-old was arrested later arrested.

Police have now confirmed that Ben Gothard-Smith, of Mitchell Avenue, Ventnor, has been charged with theft from a shop.

He has also been charged with resisting arrest, using threatening or abusive words/behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and criminal damage to a police van.

He is due to to appear at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on August 2.

He has been bailed with conditions.
