A driver has suffered what police are calling serious injuries after a car left the road and crashed into a field near Whiteley Bank on the Isle of Wight.

As previously reported, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to Shanklin Road at 7.48am.

A silver Ford Fiesta went through a hedge and careered into a field.

The road was shut between Whiteley Bank roundabout and its junction with Apse Manor Road.

It remained closed until around 10.50am, when it was reopened to traffic.

At the time, police said the road had been closed to allow a 'safe working environment' and so officers can establish what has happened.

Island Roads was contacted to provide hard road closures, the force added.

Police have now confirmed the driver of the Ford Fiesta, a man in his 30s, suffered a serious but not life threatening injury.

He was taken to hospital by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
