AN ISLE of Wight man who wrapped a metal dog lead around his knuckles and threatened members of the public has been sentenced.

Tyler Peters, of Whitepit Lane, Newport, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday, July 19.

At a previous hearing, the 21-year-old admitted possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and threatening to damage property, in Newport, on February 12.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, said police were called to a report of a male threatening a female with a metal dog lead.

She said Peters was seen to kick a dog twice in the head, and when he was confronted, he became agitated and denied the act.

Ms Miller said he entered an address and re-emerged with a metal dog lead wrapped around his fist, shouting at several witnesses and threatening to damage a car.

Tom Cooke, defending, said Peters regretted coming back out of the property, and there was shouting on both sides.

He said a witness saw three people pushing Peters and his client didn’t accept kicking the dog.

Mr Cooke said Peters had been diagnosed with autism and that went some way to explain why he reacted in the way he did, and while he did wrap the dog lead around his fist, he did not swing it.

Peters was made subject of a 12-month community order, to include 15 rehabilitation days and 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £114 surcharge.
