THOUSANDS from across the Isle of Wight descended on sunny Sandown for one of the most popular on the summer calendar.

The historic annual procession — a colourful, imaginative myriad of floats, dancers and costumed characters — weaved its way through the seaside town's streets on Saturday night (July 27).

There was plenty of vibrant music throughout the parade, from marching bands to ghetto blasters.

Watched by a big crowd, which lined the circular route from Sandown Library, the procession weaved its way through Sandown, via the High Street, Beachfield Road, Royal Crescent, Melville Street, Fitzroy Street, Station Avenue, Albert Road and Victoria Road.

How you can still make a donation to Sandown Carnival

If you didn’t get a chance to donate during the carnival, but still wish to do so, you can do this either in person at the Sandown Carnival fundraising outlet at 77a, High Street, Sandown, or online at www.sandowncarnival.com/donate

Sandown Children's Carnival preceded the main procession, with lots of eye-catching and imaginative entries, as individuals, pairs and groups.

On Facebook, a carnival committee member posted: "The sun finally made a comeback and bathed Sandown in beautiful sunshine, with people coming out in their thousands to join in the carnival fun throughout the day.

"From our children’s parade in the morning and our entertainment in Sandham Gardens during the day, to the evening’s main carnival, everyone came out and showed love and support for Sandown Carnival events.

"Once again, the creative talent on show was amazing, with a special thanks to all those who took part in the parades.

"Everyone from the smallest of walking group and marching bands, to the biggest of floats and costumes — they make Sandown Carnival what it is!"

Organisers also thanked the army of stewards, collectors, judges and other volunteers, saying they could not stage such an event without them.

"Finally, thank you to all the spectators who packed the town, gave generously to the collectors and had a great time. That’s why we all do it!"

All the money raised goes towards putting on free family events in Sandown.
