A popular Isle of Wight pub, with its origins dating back some 600 years, will reopen under under new management, after closing ten months ago.
The Sun Inn, found in Hulverstone between Brook and Brighstone, reopens today (Thursday) at midday.
This historic pub, known for its countryside views and proximity to Compton Bay beach, was closed in September 2023 and listed on the market in December.
After a campaign led by former MP Bob Seely to secure its status as a ‘community asset’, new landlords Charlotte and Nick Edwards are excited to open the doors again.
The pair, who both grew up in Lymington and now live in Wootton with their four children, said they are thrilled to make The Sun Inn a welcoming place for Islanders and tourists year-round.
Despite never managing a pub before, Charlotte and Nick are both experienced in the hospitality industry, saying it was always their dream to run their own, and are committed to maintaining the traditional charm of The Sun Inn.
They have made minimal changes, opting to “freshen up” the venue with a lick of new paint while keeping the original hanging photos and decor.
Charlotte told the County Press: “A lot of locals have come down to the pub. It has been the talk of the local area!
“They are really happy that we are keeping it a traditional family and dog-friendly pub and not a gastropub.”
We asked the new landlords what would keep patrons coming back to The Sun Inn.
Nick said: “Quality food and drink at affordable prices and friendly staff.”
Charlotte added that it was the pair’s mission to make it as nice for customers as possible, with their main priority being to cater for Island residents.
The pub has a special place in local lore, being a favourite of Hollywood star Benedict Cumberbatch, who enjoyed a ‘long lunch’ there after his wedding at the nearby Mottistone Church.
Nick, a self-proclaimed Cumberbatch ‘super fan’, expressed his excitement at the possibility of the actor visiting the pub again.
As the pub welcomes patrons back, the search for a new head chef continues, with Nick donning the apron until the role is filled.
