THE Isle of Wight will be cheering on Bonchurch discus thrower Nick Percy when he gets his 'dream' Olympic Games underway this morning (Monday, August 5).

Nick, 29, will be competing in the discus track and field qualification groups, which start at 9.10am (10.10pm Parisi time).

The Islander, whose dream it has been since a boy to compete in the Olympic Games, will realise it when he steps out into the world famous Stade de France, which once staged a football World Cup and Champions League final.

In his group, Nick will need to hit at least 66.00m to automatically qualify for Wednesday's final (August 7).

He will get three attempts at it — the three most important of his life when he steps out into the arena proudly wearing Team GB colours.

The British number one qualified for the Olympics after he broke his own Scottish record of 67.73m, in the United States, back in April.

Going into today, Nick posted on Facebook: "Thank you to everyone who has reached out. I will do our little island proud, I hope."

No worries on that score, as many wellwishers have posted on social media this past few days.

Leading Island athletics coach, Nick Groocock, was among them. He posted: "Looking forward to seeing it all. All the very best."
