THE fairy tale is over for Isle of Wight discus thrower Nick Percy who failed to progress past the Olympics qualifying round in Paris.

Nick, 29, who hails from Bonchurch, was unable to replicate the great throwing form this morning (Monday, August 5) he had going into the Olympic Games, where he broke his own Scottish record several times and became the Great Britain number one.

His three throws — 59.87m, 61.81m and 58.89m — were well below the minimum 66.00m required to qualify for the final on Wednesday (August 7).

Nick finished in 12th place.

But talking to the BBC afterwards, Nick was delighted with his participation in the games.

"I am feeling absolute joy. This is my final, being here at this event. I am really proud," said Nick.

"It’s the Olympic Games and there is a lot of pressure. You only have three attempts. It is not easy and the last few weeks have been a struggle emotionally.

"I said to my family and coach that if I walk away with a 62m throw, I have done very well. With 61.81m, you are basically there.'

"It's very rare that you can say you have nearly 70,000 clapping for you. It is a real emotional thing and I am taking it all in. I don’t want this to end.

"It is such a special day, so there is no disappointment."
