Call the Midwife fans have been given another special look at the Christmas special in exclusive photos released by the BBC. 

The Poplar-based show's annual Christmas special is set to be just as emotional as ever with hints that it could be one character last Christmas.

Previously, Call the Midwife revealed that the special will start two weeks before Christmas Day as the midwife prepares to watch Apollo 8 land on the moon.

As the world waits for a man to land on the moon, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) shares with Nonnatus house that she thinks it will be her last Yuletide.

Elsewhere, Nancy (Megan Cusack) has decided to stay at Nonnatus House as Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) offers her and Colette (Francesca Fullilove) a room.

In new photos from the BBC, Call the Midwife is set to some drama this Christmas as snow threatens to make the festive time dangerous for some.

Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Patrick Turner, previously said that snow would create "high drama", sharing: "So we don't just have snow this year, like I always say.

"It was dangerous snow, high drama where it really affects and endangers people, and affects the plot."

Now Judy Parfitt, who plays Sister Monica Joan, has given Call the Midwife fans more detail sharing: "One should recognise there are a lot of people in the population who are older and just feel that they’re never going to make it through the winter."

Adding: "And this to an extreme extent (means she) feels she's not going to make it through, so it's a matter of everybody pulling together and getting around that."

Hinting at the Christmas special, the Call the Midwife team shared: "December is upon us, the first window of the advent calendar is open, and here at Call the Midwife we begin the final countdown to our seasonal episode!"

Adding: "Over the next few weeks we'll be bringing you all the news and stories from our Christmas Special as we prepare for the most wonderful time of the year. Stay tuned!!"

Fans will be able to watch the Call the Midwife Christmas special on Christmas Day at 8.15pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
