There was a hive of activity on the course on Saturday, with various competitions being played for.

Ben Thurman (Freshwater Bay) used his knowledge of the course to his advantage to win the Vice President’s Challenge Trophy, an 18-hole medal, with a nett 65 score, beating Sundborg (Shanklin and Sandown) by a stroke.

In the Capel Morris Veterans Trophy, for players aged over 55, Chris Edmond Smith (Freshwater Bay) won with a nett 70 by one over Steve Liddington (Ryde), while Sundborg took the Haworth Trophy, a 36-hole scratch event, with 137 gross, beating Nat Riddett by two shots.

Sundborg and Riddett were on the winning side as they took the Team Shield, won by Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club players, who also included Dan Mew and George Foreman.

The highlight of the day was when Sundborg equalled the Freshwater Bay course record of 63 in his morning round.

The top four in the Haworth Trophy qualified for the McMaster Matchplay semi-finals on Sunday, which saw Sundborg beat Richard Harrison 8 and 6, and Riddett beat Dan Mew 4 and 3 to set up a cracking final.

In the afternoon, the final was suspended for 40 minutes early on, due to poor visibility from sea mist, but Sundborg continued his phenomenal form to beat Riddett 6 and 5 to round off a superb weekend for him.
