IT WAS a good day for Cowes Sports and their rivals from across the River Medina, East Cowes, in the first preliminary round of the FA Vase.

The Yachtsmen entertained Shaftesbury at Westwood Park and got off to a flying start with a goal from Jimmy Wykes from six yards out.

They doubled their lead through fellow striker, Michael McEnery before half-time — and that's how it stayed.

East Cowes Vics travelled to Folland Sports with a point to prove after successive hammerings at Beatrice Avenue in the space of three days last week.

They could not have scored at a better time — an 89th minute own goal from a Jordan Chapman corner earned them a 1-0 victory as extra time loomed.

In Division 1 of the Harwoods Renault Island League, there were goals galore as Shanklin cruised to a 7-1 victory over struggling Ventnor at the County Ground — Lyle Drew scoring a hat-trick.

Newly promoted Ryde Saints, who have had a wretched start to the season, beat Cowes Sports Reserves 5-1 at Smallbrook Stadium.
