NEWPORT keep marching on in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League following their excellent away day performance at Fawley.

The Islanders remain seventh, but are closing the gap on teams above them, after won 4-2.

After a goalless first half, lacking in quality, the game burst into life after the break.

Jacob Reynolds hit a screamer from distance to put Port a goal up on 50 minutes.

Port responded to Fawley's leveller with a strike from in-form Joe Craig on the hour.

Seven minutes later, Scott Barron powered in a header to make it 3-1.

Connor Kelly got on the scoresheet again from the spot after Reynolds was hacked down in the box, to make it 4-1 on 70 minutes.

With the Romsey come back still fresh in their minds from a week ago, there were a few nerves when Fawley pulled it back to 4-2 with ten minutes remaining, but this time, Port closed out the game to claim another three valuable points in the hunt for promotion.

After suffering a 4-0 humiliation in their mid-week derby clash with Newport, East Cowes Vics bounced back with a gritty 1-0 win at home to mid-table Petersfield United.

After a goal-less first half, struggling Vics, who remain third bottom, earned their three points with a Harry Furness strike.

In the Sydenhams Wessex Premier, Cowes Sports were hammered 5-1 by high-flying Stoneham at Westwood Park.

Michael McEnery scored the Yachtsmen's consolation.

There was a shock in the Isle of Wight County Press Challenge Cup second round when Northwood St John knocked out the holders Whitecroft and Barton Sports on penalties, after holding them 1-1 at full-time.

In Division 1 of the Island League, Shanklin closed the gap on W & B to six points, but have played a game more, after they beat Bembridge 3-1 at the County Ground, Shanklin.

Brading Town cruised to a 5-0 win over Ryde Saints at Smallbrook in their first round tie.
