ISLE OF Wight athlete Kim Murray named in the British squad for next week's World Championships.

Kim, who earned her place with a series of good races, including finishing tenth in her final World Cup race of the season in Latvia last week, her second best of the season, will compete in Altenberg, Germany, over the four-day event, starting next Thursday.

On social media, delighted Kim, 31, said: "The seasons not over yet. I’m going to my first World Championships. Let’s do this!"

“This is the biggest race of the season, so it’s an exciting time for everyone,” said Natalie Dunman, performance director for the British Skeleton team.

"We’ve selected a strong squad, with a mix of youth and experience and we’re now looking forward to seeing what they can do in Altenberg.

“It’s always tough competing on a German track, given how strong they are as a sliding nation, but we’ve had success in Altenberg in the past so there’s no reason why we can’t achieve that again.

“We’ve made our selection with the aim of getting the best results possible in Altenberg but we’ve also got one eye on the next Olympic Winter Games in China.

"We’re half-way through the Olympic quad and two years out from the Beijing Games, so the World Championships is another step towards our ultimate goal of winning medals at the next Olympics."

The team depart for Germany tomorrow (Friday), with official training scheduled to start early next week, with women’s race taking place Friday and Saturday next week.

Kim will be in the opening two heats on Friday next week, starting at 8.30am, with heats three and four at the same time on the following day.
