ISLE OF Wight professional golfer Brandon Robinson Thompson will play in his first-ever European Tour event in Qatar, which starts tomorrow (Thursday).

Brandon, 27, who grew up playing golf at Freshwater Bay Golf Club, will be teeing off at 11.40am in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha.

The tournament will run until Sunday.

The Islander qualified for the event by finishing third in a pre-tournament qualifier, with only the top three professionals going through.

Brandon carded -8 at Doha Golf Club, having shot 66, 69 and 73, with a birdie on his last hole to dramatically clinch his masters spot. Delighted Brandon said on social media: "Happy to say I will be playing in my first European Tour event in Doha.

"Couldn't be in this position without all the help and support from so many people.

"I am so grateful for this opportunity.

This was a six-month plan that has actually come together.

"I think the preparation I was able to get practicing and using all of the incredible facilities at Education City Golf Club in Doha was the difference between whether I qualified or not.

"Now the fun really begins."

There will be live coverage of the masters on Sky Sports and the NBC Golf channel in the United States.
