THERE was high drama in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup semi-finals as Shanklin scored a winner deep into in injury time against Fareham Town Reserves to set up a mouthwatering all-Isle of Wight final against Brading Town.

Pete Wilson scored twice in the Islanders' 2-1 win at the County Ground.

Shanklin opened the scoring on 22 minutes when Wilson's scuffed shot from just outside the penalty area wrong-footed the Fareham keeper.

Shanklin had the best of the possession in the opening half hour, but a poor defensive header by Ben Gregory allowed the Fareham winger to put in a decent cross from the left for their centre forward to finish neatly — lifting over Jack Powell, who went down too early — to level just before half time.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Shanklin were virtually camped in Fareham's half after the interval.

On 56 minutes, Lewis Bishton saw his low effort from the left pushed away for a corner, even though it looked as though it was drifting wide of the post.

Shanklin skipper Iain Seabrook saw his superb 30-yard thunderbolt tipped over just after the hour, then the Fareham keeper was called into action on 71 minutes — holding on well to a powerful Shem Michel strike.

Ten minutes later, Powell was called upon to save a header at his near post then, with two minutes of normal time remaining, he did well to parry a good strike for a corner.

Just as both managers were compiling their lists for a penalty shoot-out, Gary Scott-Jackson was tripped just inside the box.

Following quick consultation with the linesman, the referee pointed to the spot four minutes into injury time.

Wilson stepped up and finished the penalty with aplomb to spark great scenes of celebration in front of a 200-strong crowd.

After the game, Shanklin boss, Paul Hawood, said: "We kept on going to the end. To get to the final of the Hampshire Cup is amazing and for it to be an all-Island final — the first ever — against our old adversaries is great for Island football.

"We hope the final will be held on the Island."
