THE fifth round of the Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club — the Jeffries Cup — will be the last trials meeting on the Island for some time, amid the coronavirus crisis.

The event, part of the 2020 Isle of Wight Winter Series Trials Championship, was held at Shorwell Chalk Pit.

The venue, considered one of the Island’s best for trials biking, has everything from steep woodland, to chalk bowls, littered with rocks.

Despite the incredibly wet winter so far, the ground was surprisingly dry and gripped well — a pleasant surprise for the 27 riders who completed the trial, which included 2019 ACU Expert British Trials Champion, Chris Stay, in the elite class.

Stay made extremely light work of the eight sections — dropping just one mark throughout the trial.

His older brother, James Stay, also an accomplished rider, made a return to the series having missed the previous round — finishing at the front of the pack in the expert class, dropping 28 marks.

Chris and James’ dad, Alan, stayed on top again, winning the intermediate class with a fantastic ride, dropping just four marks — 21 clear of second placed Sonny Gaskin.

Just two riders competed in the Over-50 class — Simon Newnham (15 marks), winning on his GasGas by 20.

There was a good battle in the clubman class, between four riders, with Geoff Taylor, on his Montesa, winning with a total of 29.

In the novice class, Brian Brockwell was the clear winner, having dropped just 14 marks — 20 clear of Steve Chase.

Among the three T-Shock class riders, Nick Symes made light work of the trial on his trusty Honda TLR, dropping a miserly four marks to win it.

Meanwhile, Tristan Osborne was the solo rider in the Ad/Beg class — clearing four of the sections and dropping only eight marks.

In the sportsman class, Mike Taylor managed the rare feat of going an entire trial without a single penalty.

Two riders competed in the youth expert class, with Dan Locke continuing to impress — winning with 15 dropped.

Alfie Gaskin was the lone youth intermediate rider, completing the trial with 63 marks.

Freddie Death was the only rider in the youth beginner class — the first outing on his new TRS 125cc machine — scoring 32.
