THERE was one result you could count on in the final match of the All-Island Cricket League season — a Ryde team winning the Division B title to make it a special double.

Ryde II faced Ryde III in a ‘friendly’ showdown for the title at Harding Shute on Saturday.

The former won it by four wickets, but they had to rely on an excellent innings of 93 not out by their skipper, Andy Day, to see them over the line.

A great result, to make it a historic double after Ryde I won the Division A title a few weeks ago, with both sides gaining 100 per cent win records.

Ryde II won the toss and put the thirds into bat — and put pressure on them straight away, thanks some excellent bowling from Will Mew (4-39).

Ben Shannon hit 66 and gave the thirds some hope — particularly when he struck up a good partnership with Lucas Harrison (26) in the middle order.

But once their wickets were taken, only George Shannon (29 not out) showed any further resistance to the Ryde II attack as they reached 189-8.

Arthur Attrill, another fine teenage talent, grabbed 3-15 from his five overs.

Ryde II also started poorly, losing the three openers cheaply, until Tom Morgan (52) and Day put things right — reaching their target with two overs to spare and winning by four wickets.

The pick of the bowlers were Neil Redmond and George Shannon, who both got 2-18.

In the other Division B game played, Ventnor II comfortably beat Shanklin and Godshill II by ten wickets at Westhill last Friday.

Shanklin scored a modest 128-5, with opener Jack Powell top scoring with 34 not out. Charlie Turpin took 2-31.

Ventnor, with a player less, knocked off the runs in 16 overs, with Ben Woodhouse smashing 75 not out and Dan Cox 38 not out.

In the September Cup on Saturday, also at Westhill, Ventnor made it a double to beat Shanklin by eight wickets.

On a day when two young captains went head to head — Ross Whyte, of Ventnor, and Benji White, of Shanklin — it was some of the older Ventnor players who turned back the clock.

Shanklin were put into bat and were skittled out for just 103 — Rob Snell doing the damage with his 5-14, supported by Dan Cox (2-6) and Zeph Wells (2-16).

Ventnor got their runs in 20 overs, with Martin Blackman (51 not out) and Mark Fletcher (41) top scoring.

In the other cup games, Island Bakeries lost to Freshwater (Sam Scadgell 44 not out) by nine wickets, while Ryde (Ben Shannon 39 and 4-7) beat St Helens (Lee Brown 48) by 53 runs.
