THE unsettling backdrop of playing competitive golf during a pandemic did not stop Nat Riddett from holding his nerve to win the prestigious Isle of Wight Golf Union Island Championships at the fourth time of asking.
The traditional weekend event, held at Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club, saw some great play on the opening day of the scratch competition, with the first 36 holes seeing Riddett and George Foreman tied on 145.
Following the pair, playing on ‘home’ turf, were Osborne’s Paul Spreadbury (146) and Shanklin and Sandown player, Joseph Green (147), which made up the next day’s matchplay semi-finals.
Foreman, by virtue of his better afternoon score, won the Haworth Challenge Cup.
Forman and Riddett won their games, which set things up for a fascinating final.
It was nip and tuck over the first nine holes, but Riddett took command over the final nine holes to win the coveted McMaster Challenge Cup by a 5&4 margin.
Spreadbury won the 36-hole Goodall Cup with his nett 140 score, while Shawn Ford, captain of Shanklin and Sandown, won the veterans’ Capel Morris Cup with his nett 67 card.
The Team Shield was retained by Shanklin and Sandown. The team comprised Foreman, Riddett, Green and Dan Mew.
